About Catherine

(She/Her)

*Catherine is on maternity leave and will be returning December 2024*

As a therapist, I have the privilege of witnessing transformation. I love my work because it has afforded me the opportunity to sit alongside individuals, couples and families as they work to heal old wounds while creating new patterns. I firmly believe that through self-reflection and compassionate love we can find new ways of being in the world which offer us more joy and a deeper sense of meaning and purpose.

“Joy is not made to be a crumb.” - Mary Oliver

Having spent nearly a decade working in social services, first as an anti-violence advocate, and then a Registered Psychotherapist, I have witnessed the capacity we hold to heal and grow as individuals and families. I began my career working with survivors of sexual violence where I came to understand how committed we are as humans to survive and to find solace. Even in the darkest of moments I have watched countless people make meaning of their lives, narrate their suffering and overcome severe loss and trauma with a sense of empowerment. There are no ways to curtail grief, but we can live through it while creating change. I know this both through my work and through my own lived experiences. Our grief can shape us, and in therapy, we can work to influence how grief shapes us and how we respond to life’s most trying moments.

As a therapist, I use a client-centered, trauma-informed and anti-oppressive lens in my work with clients. I am trained in various modalities including EMDR, Emotion Focused Couples Therapy, Emotion Focused Family Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Collaborative Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy. Most recently, I have been learning more about Internal Family Systems, Gottman’s Couple Therapy and somatic approaches to healing trauma. I believe each of these modalities offers value in my work with clients, and I use an integrative approach that draws on different theories and methodologies based on the approaches that resonate with clients. I offer warmth and compassion, as well as direction, gentle challenge and knowledge.

My formal education includes a Masters of Arts in Child & Youth Care from the University of Victoria, and a Masters of Science in Couple and Family Therapy from the University of Guelph. I practice with individuals, families and couples and we work on a range of issues, including healing intergenerational trauma, communication break down, relational injuries, grief, parenting, life transitions, anxiety, depression and intimacy issues. I have a particular interest in working with trauma survivors and have specialized knowledge in nervous system responses and attachment.

When I am not working, you can find me trying to keep up with my toddler as she discovers the world. I also love hiking with my dogs, watching British crime TV shows and spending time with friends and family.
